Hydrostatic Forklifts

What is Hydrostatic Drive?

If you have ever seen a bulldozer or an Army tank, you have seen a hydrostatic transmission at work.

Hydrostatic drive simply put is using hydraulic fluid to turn the drive motors.

Linde pioneered the placement of a hydrostatic drive transmission into a forklift truck decades ago. In fact, Linde's use of hydrostatic transmissions can be traced back to 1955 and its Hydrocar - a platform truck. Only Linde has a true 100% hydrostatic transmission. Others have tried to duplicate this feature - without much success.

Benefits of the Linde Hydrostatic transmission include, smooth driving without stalling, millimeter accuracy in positioning, minimal wear, long life, and low fuel consumption. The number of components needed to turn the drive motors is substantially reduced. Linde has eliminated the Clutch, Gearbox, Manual Gearshift, Differential, and Footbrake. These items are costly to repair or replace and prove very unreliable over time.

The only job of the I.C. engine is to turn the hydraulic pump motor. This pump motor sends fluid into the hydrostatic transmission, thus turning the drive motors. With this set up, the engine does not need to run at high RPMs to move the truck or the load. As the drive pedal is pressed, more fluid is delivered to the drive motors, thus drastically reducing fuel consumption. The engine works less, which translates into longer life, less wear, and less down time due to engine related failures.

Braking is accomplished through reducing and/or stopping the flow of fluid into the drive motors. As the operator releases off the drive pedal, less fluid is sent to the hydrostatic transmission. The unit slows until a point where a multiple oil-disc brake system locks down the drive motors, acting as a parking brake. No conventional automotive-type disc brakes as on competitor's equipment. Less wear, less repair, less cost.
